Introduction to Industrial Process Management

Scope
This course is designed for the entry-level instrumentation mechanic or experienced electrician who needs to understand the basics of industrial process measurement. With a focus upon OSHA compliance, the student will be introduced to process measurement with the understanding that the individual must be a qualified person to be able to work on the equipment. With that in mind the person will learn about the construction, operation, and how to avoid the hazards associated with both pneumatic and electronic process measurement devices. Industrial Process Measurement is one of three courses developed to assist the individual to have the knowledge necessary to pass the International Society for Measurement and Control’s (ISA) Certified Control System Technicians Exam (CCST).

Prerequisites: A working knowledge of basic AC and DC electricity (Ohm’s Law, Watt’s Law, and Kirchhoff’s current and voltage laws, and Lenz’s Law).

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course the participant should be able to:

  • Determine the manipulated variable, controlled variable, and the measured variable given a description of various typical industrial processes.
  • Convert a pressure, level, flow, or temperature process variable value into the appropriate pneumatic or electrical value given different types of instruments.
  • Identify the electrical variable that is either directly or inferentially used by various instruments to determine the value of a measured variable.
  • Calibrate various types of instruments and transmitters using ISA industrial consensus standard techniques.
