Installation and Maintenance of Variable Frequency Drives

Scope
This one-day course is designed to introduce technicians and engineers to common installation practices typical of variable frequency drives. Even though this course stresses the practical aspects of variable frequency drives, it also presents a discussion of ac induction motors, NEC installation and grounding requirements, and applicable OSHA regulations concerning variable frequency drives.

The use of variable frequency drives present the opportunity for many improvements in motor control. In addition to increased motor speed and torque control, VFDs also offer the promise of Electrical Energy Savings, Power Factor Improvements, and reduced mechanical wear and tear on mechanical components.

But with these improvements also comes additional challenges. Such topics as harmonics, electro-static discharge, proper troubleshooting tools, and radio frequency interference will be discussed. In addition, the factory default settings for the programmable drive parameters are often not set for the best performance of a particular application. Because of this the significance of the various programmable parameters will be discussed.

Prerequisites: An understanding of basic electricity is required to be able to get the most benefit from this course.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand common AC drive applications and how to evaluate them.
  • Be able to size input and output conductors, disconnects, overcurrent devices, and the enclosures related to VFDs.
  • Be able to install the wiring to VFDs for optimum system operation.
  • Be able to set and adjust the parameters of a VFD for best system performance and energy savings.
